The city of Eindhoven, and more generally the Netherlands, are currently going through an urgent housing crisis, mostly due to limiting laws on the authorized number of registrations allowed per address and the hyper speculation upon the housing market.
As a consequence of that situation, lots of people around me are left in an incredibly precarious situation, most of them spending years without a permanent, official address to register to.
In contrast to this precarity, it is a rather common situation to see empty buildings in the center of Eindhoven, or empty parcels of the city, often situated between big, recent, planned areas of the city.
Some materials are not assimilated to precarity. Mohair, leather, aluminium, are not assimilated to precarity. Having a bed in the street is. By making this contrast visible, I intended to denormalize what had become a integrated and invisible part of the life in Eindhoven.
I dreamt I was sleeping in a fish, soft, so soft on the skin.
I dreamt this fish had a skin, rough, so rough on the ground.
Scales like spikes hammering the ground. Showing my comfort,
For when the city is abrupt my mohair bed unfolds. For when the city is asleep finally I am awake,
Dreaming, dreaming like a fish out of water.
